Michigan's Assistive Technology Program

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

"The Success of Assistive Technology has more to do with people than machines. All the right parts and pieces together won’t work miracles by themselves. It is people who make technology powerful by creatively using it to fulfill their dreams."

Examples of Assistive Technology:

Low Tech Devices:

  • Reacher
  • Drinking Straws
  • Book Holder
  • Button Aid
  • Pen Grip
  • Grab Bar
  • Adaptive Toys

High Tech Devices:

  • Voice Recognition
  • Word Prediction
  • Augmentative Communication
  • Power Wheelchair
  • Environmental Controls

What are Assistive Technology Services?

Where is AT Used?

AT is used anywhere a person with disabilities might be. AT supports Michigan citizens with disabilities at work, at play, making use of local community resources, engaging in political and social activities, learning in K-12 or post secondary education - anywhere any other citizen might choose to be.
