What is Assistive Technology? | Come See Us! What is Assistive Technology?Assistive Technology is any tool allowing individuals with a disabilities to use their own unique abilities to reach their goals. Examples of Assistive Technology include but are not limited to talking word processors, specialized keyboards, communication devices, arm and wrist supports, amplified telephone handsets, screen magnifiers, wheelchairs, ramps, grabbers, environmental controls. Most people start with a goal such as, "I want to access a computer but I can’t use a keyboard", or "I cannot see a computer screen but I want to get on the Internet", or "My speech is difficult for others to understand and I want to tell people what I am thinking", or "I want to move out of this nursing home and live on my own", or "I want to live in my own home as independently as possible." Come See Us!SAIL can help you learn about assistive technology, make an informed decision about what AT to purchase and help you find funding for your AT. Examples include amplified telephones, vibrating alarm clocks, signaling devices that can alert you to a ringing doorbell.
