Fair Housing Act

  • Fair Housing, It's Your Right: A page dedicated to fair housing from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Everything related to the Fair Housing Act.
  • A guide to disability laws: from the United States Department of Justice, this links to the section on the Fair Housing Act. Includes information about how to file a complaint.
  • Fair Housing First: an initiative designed to promote compliance with the Fair Housing Act design and construction requirements. The program offers comprehensive and detailed instruction programs, useful online web resources, and a toll-free information line for technical guidance and support.
  • Housing Discrimination Complaints: From the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development inlcudes on-line forms for complaints.
  • Fair Housing Campaign: The Fair Housing National Multimedia Campaign is designed to increase public awareness of the Fair Housing Act and its protections, encourage the reporting of fair housing discrimination to the appropriate agencies, and provide information and resources to help communities and institutions support individuals and families who exercise their fair housing rights.

Michigan Housing Laws

  • Inclusive Home Design Act: On June 6, 2006, the hard work of Michigan advocates paid off as Michigan enacted the Inclusive Home Design Act, Act No. 182. The act was introduced by Reps. Wenke and Miller. Representative Wenke received the "Corrie Bair Building Inclusive Communities Award" from the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition in recognition of his advocacy for passage of this act.
  • Fair Housing of Southeastern Michigan offers Housing Advocate Training Manual in April 2006. The manual is designed as an aid to training social service organization staff on Fair Housing and Landlord/Tenant Law as well as housing subsidy Programs. A news item from the Michigan Poverty Law Program.
  • Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act: Act 220 of 1976 An Act to define the civil rights of persons with disabilities; to prohibit discriminatory practices, policies, and customs in the exercise of those rights; to prescribe penalties and to provide remedies; and to provide for the promulgation of rules. From Section 102:
    (1)The opportunity to obtain employment, housing, and other real estate and full and equal utilization of public accommodations, public services, and educational facilities without discrimination because of a disability is guaranteed by this act and is a civil right.
  • (2) Except as otherwise provided in article 2, a person shall accommodate a person with a disability for purposes of employment, public accommodation, public service, education, or housing unless the person demonstrates that the accommodation would impose an undue hardship.
