Internship Opportunities for Students with Disabilities

1.  The White House Internship Program

The White House Internship Program is a unique opportunity to learn more about he daily operations of the White House. In addition to normal office duties interns attend weekly lectures, volunteer at special events, participate e tours and contribute to a community service project in the Washington, DC area.
Applications are due June 26, 2007 for Fall 2007 (September 4 to December 14, 2007.)

Pride Opportunities for Students with Disabilities

1.  Disability Pride Parade

Check out the fourth annual Disability Pride Parade in Chicago. Disability Pride Parade Mission is to change the way people think about and define “disability,” To break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities and to promote the belief in society that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can take Pride.

The Parade date is July 21.

2.  Financial Assistance

3.  Road to Freedom Bus

The mission of Road to Freedom Bus Tour is to alert Americans to the need for Congress to keep the promise of the ADA by restoring the protections that have been eroded over the years.  The Road to Freedom Bus will be in Michigan for the following dates.

  • Sunday, August 12 Lansing: 12 pm – 3 pm
    A press event at or near the capital will be followed by a fun, family picnic celebration of the ADA’s 17th Birthday at River Walk Park.  For more information, please contact Marsha Moers at the Capital Area for Independent Living (517)241-0393.
 
  • Monday, August 13 Flint: 11 am – 12 pm
    The Disability Network will host a media and community leadership event in Flint celebrating the ADA and supporting the ADA restoration Act.  For more information, please contact Mike Zelley at (810) 742-1800.
 
  • Monday, August 13 Mackinaw Bridge: 3 pm – 7 pm
    A picnic is being planned near the bridge. While the bus is not scheduled to stop, a group is planning to show support by greeting and waving the tour across “big Mac”.  For more information, please contact Amy Maes at the Superior Alliance for Independent Living (SAIL) (906) 228-5744.
 
  • Tuesday, August 14 Marquette: 12 pm – 3 pm
    Several organizations are joining together to celebrate the ADA’s 17th birthday and welcome the Tour.  A picnic will be held in downtown Marquette with food, music, fun, information from local organizations, and the Road to Freedom Tour.  For more information, please contact Amy Maes at the Superior Alliance for Independent Living (SAIL) (906) 228-5744.

Scholarships Available for Students with Disabilities

1.  Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST) Scholarship Program

Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology Scholarship is open to all U.S. citizens, who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM disciplineat a college or university that is accredited in the United Statesare eligible for the MUST funding opportunity. Students of all underrepresented groups (Women, African Americans, Hispanic Americans,Native Americans and persons with disabilities) are encouraged to apply.


Applications are due: May 31, 2007                                                           

2.  Ryan Mullaly Second Chance Fund

This non-profit corporation is offering scholarship assistance to young people who are fighting cancer. They are looking for young men and women whose high school years were disrupted by cancer and whose ability to qualify for most scholarships was precluded by the extensive absenteeism and physical disabilities which result from chemotherapy and radiation.

3.  Exceptional Nurse

Exceptional Nurse awards eight different scholarships to qualified students with disabilities to help with their education in a nursing education program.


Deadline: June 1, 2007

4.  Ethel Louise Armstrong (ELA) Scholarship

The Ethel Louise Armstrong (ELA) Foundation, Inc. scholarship is for any woman with a physical disability who is enrolled in graduate program- a Masters degree or above- at an accredited college or university in the United States.


Applications are due: June 1, 2007.

Mental Illness Awareness

1.  Participate in Schizophrenia Awareness Week:

The National Schizophrenia Foundation is pleased to provide you with the Community Action Kit for this year’s Schizophrenia Awareness Week (SAW): May 20-26, 2007. This year’s theme is “Realizing Recovery, Shattering Stigma.” They encourage you to plan an event or activity in observance of SAW, no matter how large or small.

2.  Mental Health Rally

The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Board is a sponsor of the 2007 Walk a Mile in My Shoes Rally for Mental Health held on May 24, 2007 at the State Capital Building in Lansing.

3.  Half of Us

Half of Us is a webpage dedicated to fighting stigma and raising awareness around mental health especially pertaining to college students.  The webpage is full of video stories of students and celebrities living with mental illness, including Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy and Mary J Blige.
