The second forum was held in Genesee County on September 26, 2007. The topic was affordable, accessible, and safe housing.

Presenters and Activities

Participants started out by listening to a motivating speech by Geraldine Redmond. Geraldine is a person with a disability who is part of the Flint Housing Commission. She talked about her experience with getting involved and making a difference around housing issues.

Next the participants learned about some of the housing issues in their communities such as accessibility, affordability, and safety. The next few hours were spent attending breakout workshop sessions where participants practiced taking action on the issues they learned about. Workshop choices included:

  • Getting Attention: Letter Writing Campaigns
  • Your Voice Counts: Public Comment and Hearings
  • Dreams of Home: Addressing Housing in Person Centered Planning Meetings

The afternoon consisted of meeting with local advocacy leaders to learn about and create action plans to make a difference in their communities.
