By: Rachel DancyAlong the spacious beach, an assortment of seashells lies in the sand. All of them are different and unique; some are large while others are small. They are designed in such a particular way, each possessing splendor and beauty. It is not the size that is important, but the genuine individuality that attracts children and adults to pick them up and carry them home in their pocket. From a distance, it is hard to find originality of seashells; they all look the same. Up close though, differences prevail. Originality can be attributed to people with disabilities as well since each of us is designed differently. We possess various strengths and talents that define us giving shape and character. As one would examine a handful and see how each of us is different and unique, but all having some wear and tear, one person might notice a clever woman who stutters, an artistic man with a visual impairment, a musical man in a wheelchair and a comical woman who is deaf. Each person is valuable and radiates beauty and splendor to those fortunate enough to see it through imperfections. As seashells of various sizes and shapes are caressed by waves and sand, so people with talents and disabilities are shown love and affection by others. Connections for Community Leadership is funded by the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council. |
