Leadership Opportunities for Students with Disabilities

Summer Leadership Program in Tokyo

MIUSA will lead a 16-day program to Tokyo, Japan, tentatively scheduled from August 1 - 17, 2006. The program is focused on building leadership and cross-cultural skills in twelve young emerging leaders with disabilities, all between the ages of 18 – 24. People with disabilities who are interested in a cross-cultural and disability rights learning experience are encouraged to apply.

Sixth Annual Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion and Disability Conference

The conference is seeking undergraduate and graduate research; performance, writing or visual art. Applied and community service projects for a poster session and reception on Monday, April 17, 2006.

Be Published or Awarded $1000

A chance to be published or awarded $1000 to present your best practices at a national conference! The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE) wants to know what campuses of all sizes across the nation are successfully doing to serve students with non-apparent disabilities (e.g. learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, psychiatric conditions, health-related disabilities, etc.) who are participating in greater numbers in education abroad.

An Opportunity to CONNECT!

CONNECT Retreat

March 24-26 will be the first statewide networking opportunity for campus leaders of organizations for students with disabilities. The CONNECT retreat will be held at the Leaven Retreat Center www.leaven.org/ in Lyons, Michigan. Students will have the opportunity to network with one another, share ideas, talk about past and present accomplishments, and learn by connecting with other leaders like themselves. The retreat will cover a variety of topics including:

• How to network with other students and agencies in the state of Michigan to make a greater impact on the disability rights movement.
• How to recruit and maintain membership
• How to keep the sustainability of your group when members graduate
• How to hold campus wide events, including recruitment of speakers
• and much, much more All topics were selected and chosen by conversations held with student disability organizations, and will be led by student leaders.

This retreat is free to participants, including food, lodging and all events; a small stipend will be provided to cover transportation costs.

Scholarships Available for Students with Disabilities

Study Abroad Scholarship

Over 700 scholarships are available to undergraduates participating in study
abroad programs. The program aims to support students who are traditionally
underrepresented including community college students, students with diverse
ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. To be eligible,
students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of the
application.
Deadline for fall study abroad April 4th

Children’s Hemiplegia and Stroke Association

survivors.

Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults

language.
