Accessible Voting - Marquette

An informational forum on accessible voting was held on May 9, 2008 in Marquette, Michigan.

Presenters and Activities

attendees sitting at tables paying attention.67 people, majority of whom have cognitive disabilities, from across the entire Upper Peninsula spent the day learning all about voting.  Attendees received important information on voting including:

  • How  and where to vote,
  • Researching candidates,
  • Obtaining an absentee ballot,
  • Voter rights,
  • How to identify elected officials,Participants register to vote.
  • And much much more!

In addition, participants got hands on experience with an Automark voting machine and played an interactive  voting game. Participants were also given a chance to register to vote and more than 20 people took advantage of the opportunity.  

We were honored to have WLUC TV 6 News join us for the morning.  Thanks to them, our message hparticipant at voting machineit an even larger audience.

  • 84% of respondents said “much” or “a lot.”
  • 11% of respondents said "Some."

How likely are you to use the information you received today?

  • 85% of the respondents said “very likely” or “definitely.”

Do you feel like you have the knowledge base to talk to policy makers about accessible communities?

  • 37% of respondents said “yes."
  • 44% of respondents said “maybe.”

What did you like best about today?

  • “The material was presented in a clear concrete usable way."

  • "To stand up for yourself and speak up if you want to vote."
  • "Absolutely. I will assist people in registering to vote."

How can we improve today’s activities?

  • “Perfect! Let's do it again!"
  • "How to learn more about voting and talking to group homes that might help them."

Overall, how would you rate your satisfaction with this seminar?

  • 100% of the respondents were “satisfied” or “very satisfied.”
