In 2009 Michigan Disability Rights
Coalition Staff, with our partners:
- Encouraged Area Agencies on Aging
to adopt Person-Centered Thinking
as central to their organization’s
culture.
- Facilitated our ATXchange where 25 devices were exchanged for a savings of $48,237.00 and 335
new people are using the free classified-ad site for used assistive technology.
- Supported Centers for Independent
Living as they transitioned 170
people from nursing facilities
to their chosen homes in the
community.
- Collaborated with over 100 people
with disabilities and allies who
advocated for housing, long-term
supports and other rights of people
with disabilities.
- Celebrated the 10th anniversary
of the Supreme Court’s Olmstead
decision by holding an ice cream
social.
- Coordinated local sites that
delivered 161 demonstrations of
463 assistive technology devices for
240 people.
- Granted Cookie Gant scholarships
for more than 10 individuals to
further develop their leadership
skills.
- Provided Proud & Powerful
Leadership Trainings to 6 local
advocacy groups.
- Supported more than 20 people as
they participated in the Community
Choice Act Rally in Washington, DC.
All followed up their advocacy with
their legislators.
- Successfully advocated for people
transitioning out of nursing homes
to be classified as homeless, making
them eligible for housing vouchers
for homeless people.
- Received the Developmental
Disability Council’s Including Our
Neighbors grant. This 5-year grant
will allow us to promote inclusion
through neighborhood associations
and community groups.
