What Can People Do?
Here are some ideas for you and your group to help fight for the
civil right to live in the community with adequate support:
- Learn about the long-term care system. Contact
RoAnne Chaney or Carolyn LeJuste at
our office to talk to your group about long-term care.
- Identify people in your area who can advocate for
change.
- Build relationships with your legislators.
Tell them this is not a partisan (Democrat or Republican) issue. It is
about civil rights. To contact your state Representative, go to:
http://house.mi.gov/find_a_rep.asp.
To contact your state Senator, go to:
http://www.senate.michigan.gov/SenatorInfo/find-your-senator.htm.
- Tell legislators and everyone you know that we
need: Money Follows the Person (to where they want to live), a Single
Point of Entry, money according to need, a fair process for everyone, and a
living wage for personal assistants (direct care workers).
- Write letters to editors, legislators, and
the Governor.
- Ask others to help reform the system.
- Volunteer for speakers' bureaus or panel
discussions.
- Do presentations in your community. Our
office can help you with this.
- Volunteer for Citizens for Better Care to
help monitor nursing homes and find out what goes on there.
