A professional will do an evaluation of equipment or assistive technology to help match your skills/abilities, need, and use of technology. This is important to make sure you get the technology that will really be assistive and will cause harm to you. In many cases funding depends on a written referral and detailed assessment. Evaluation/Assessment is an important set in development of a funding strategy for obtaining Assistive Technology (See Step 2 of the Funding Strategy for more information). A professional evaluation should include consideration of a variety of products from different vendors. Follow-up training should also be a consideration during this process. For more information about evaluation/assessment, please see the article “How to Get a Good Assessment”.
